I am taking a break from writing a blog this week. I have learned, sadly, that making sense simply doesn’t matter, especially if you’re a certain authoritarian leader who stood before an important global group and spewed embarrassingly inaccurate “scientific” information. While the world snickered, meanwhile, MAGA called for “bombing” said global group over an escalator breakdown, which has become another conspiracy theory for MAGA acolytes. I think I just need a break from news, or more accurately, from MAGA-filtered news.
In the past week, we’ve seen Jimmy Kimmel fired for daring to criticize the U.S. president. Politicians at all levels have long been fodder for comedians. Saturday Night Live ridiculed Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, George W Bush, Newt Gingrich, Barack Obama, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Joe Biden, Sarah Palin, and the list goes on and on. Not one of these complained. Comedy is well known for “roasting” people. Why then is our current POTUS unable to sustain similar comedy treatment? Thankfully, American outrage at free speech impingement reversed the Kimmel decision- for the most part. One in five Americans, will still not be able to see his show.
To all my friends and readers- Please, be fair.
Hypocrisy occurs when standards are unevenly applied. Here’s an example: crying foul over Charlie Kirk but laughing at the murder of Democratic lawmakers. Or another: calling the radical right “good people” when they use racist slurs but the radical left is evil for protesting racism.
Selectively applied standards create inequality. Indeed, applying standards to one group and not to another is the very definition of Fascism which prioritizes one group— a defined group of elites— over another. Sound familiar? This is how billionaires get tax cuts while hungry moms and children are called enemies of the state and denied support. This is how we have convinced millions of Americans without health insurance to fight against their right to have health insurance. This is how we slowly erode bodily rights for women but say “not my body” regarding vaccines.
Just. Be. Fair. That’s all.
